I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. This is the first that I have read of this author and I really enjoyed her style of writing. Claire has a small Christmas themed shop in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has little time for anything but making her shop a success. One night after work someone assaulted her in her driveway but ran away when the neighbors dog beckoned attention. He promised he was not finished and would be back. Riley gets a call from his close friend Ray who he served with in the service asking for him to help Claire discover who wants her dead. Reluctantly he agrees to check things out figuring maybe a day or two at the least will be involved if he even takes the case. Before he even gets a chance to talk to Claire he witnesses a car try to run her down and barely has time to get her to safety. He can't walk away it is obvious she needs his help.Product details

But out of the blue, her world explodes into a nightmare straight out of spy movie. Her house is being broken into and searched, and she is being attacked. But why? Maybe security consultant Riley can find out why.
Riley does not put out warm-and-fuzzy vibes. He is burned out, stung by his ex-wife, haunted by a young girl he couldn’t save, and vows never to work with women again. But when a thug tries to kill Claire and she winds up in Riley’s arms, he know he can’t walk away.
I like this story although near the end I felt it was drawn out. I felt a couple of chapters could have been deleted which would have moved the story along at a faster pace. It seemed a little confusing at first, but soon - if you paid attention - the questions, thoughts, theories and answers slowly weaved their way to a great ending.
Looking for hot sex scenes? Then skip this book...entirely. There are none. There are a couple of scenes where it is implied they had sex but that’s it. Even the kissing scenes are practically - swoosh...it’s over.
Other than that, a good story that I would recommend and definitely read again.
This is the first time I have read a novel by this author and I was impressed. I liked how the story develops quickly between Claire & Riley and does not linger with her perspective and then his perspective and then both sides join together. After Clair is attacked, she is told by friends that she needs to hire someone to find out why this is happening and what is going on. So, she hires Riley as her private security guard to help her figure out what is going on and why someone would want to harm her. It kept me reading and interested.
The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is due to the fact that once the plot of the story started to unravel, I figured out what was going on. Plus, I did not "feel" the relationship between Riley & Claire. I found myself going back and re-reading a few pages to make sure I hadn't missed anything between them. I'm not saying that the author has to be graphic about their intimate relationship but give it a little "umph"! This is where the book fell flat for me. I have read many books where the romantic side of a relationship isn't graphic but I wasn't left flat, either.
I think the right person will enjoy this book but if you are a romantic at heart like me, you will feel the same.
An Excellent, fast paced thriller that you will continue to turn the pages until the very end. Women writers can and do know how to write and this writer proves it with this great story. Claire is a small Christmas shop owner in the town of Williamsburg, whose mother has died just the year before. Although sad, she has her friends Mary and her son Damien and her business to keep her busy. The only thing that she does not understand is why someone is possibly stalking her. Threatening phone calls and someone has been inside her house. As she returns home after closing her shop one night someone grabs her and attacks. Filing a statement with the police, her friend Mary suggests that her brother may know someone that would help her find out who has been doing this to her. Riley is Mary's brother's the friend and the rest of the story is yours to read.
This well crafted romance and thriller novel goes through a series of revelations. Just when you think you have a handle on who wants Claire Spencer dead, another interpretation emerges. She is a good every day person who is totally out of her depth, as we all would be, when a fumbling assassin marks her for murder. Fortunately, in Ben Riley she has a knight errant. To muddle the metaphor, Riley comes equipped with an entire Oceans Eleven of cohorts who are as rough and ready as he is - all of whom are willing participants in the attempt to save Claire ... from whom, exactly? Lots of fun, and Ellis Vidler is at her best in delineating her charcter's inner thoughts about her predicament ... and about Ben Riley! Five stars for entertainment and plotting. Whether any of this could actually take place in the real world is a question which need not detain us!

The romance was minimal, very one dimensional. There was no give and take between Riley and Clair, no banter, no sass, no anticipation, no romantic build...they just were. They were good characters, but lacked believable chemistry.
If you take the romance out of the book, it is a good story. A little too much information in some areas, lacking in others. Lots of twists and turns. Lots of who-done-it for the suspense/mystery readers to enjoy. Forewarned, there are a lot of characters to wade through -hope you're good with names.
The ending was so bare and insufficient, it ruined what would have been a better book.
Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants more of an suspense/mystery book over a traditional romantic suspense. It just wasn't my cup of tea...or coffee...or cider. <--- read the book, you'll understand.
